PennHIP Evaluation

Early detection. Informed decisions. Healthier hips for life.

At Evervet Veterinary Clinic, we offer PennHIP hip evaluation. An advanced, evidence-based screening method that accurately measures hip laxity and helps predict the risk of canine hip dysplasia. Our certified provider, Dr. Geneviene Lim, is trained to perform PennHIP radiography to the highest standards of safety and accuracy.

What Is PennHIP?

PennHIP (Pennsylvania Hip Improvement Program) is a specialised radiographic technique developed to objectively assess hip joint laxity in dogs. Unlike traditional hip scoring systems that evaluate arthritic changes later in life, PennHIP can detect hip looseness as early as 16 weeks of age. PennHIP uses specific X-ray views to calculate a Distraction Index (DI)—a numerical measurement of hip laxity. The lower the DI, the tighter the hip joint and the lower the risk of developing hip dysplasia and osteoarthritis.

Why Choose PennHIP Over Traditional Hip Scoring?

1. Earlier Detection

  • Screening possible from 4 months old

  • Identifies risk before arthritis develops

2. Objective & Quantitative

  • Provides a measurable Distraction Index (DI)

  • Compared against breed-specific databases

3. Better Breeding Decisions

  • Helps responsible breeders reduce hip dysplasia prevalence

  • Identifies dogs with tighter-than-average hips

4. Proactive Pet Care

  • Allows early lifestyle, weight, and exercise management

  • Supports early intervention planning

What Is Hip Dysplasia?

Canine hip dysplasia is a developmental condition where the hip joint does not fit properly, leading to joint instability, pain, lameness, and eventually arthritis. It is common in:

  • Labrador Retrievers

  • Golden Retrievers

  • German Shepherds

  • Rottweilers

  • Border Collies

  • Large and giant breed dogs

However, hip dysplasia can occur in any breed or mixed-breed dog. Early screening through PennHIP allows pet owners to take preventive steps before clinical signs appear.

Our PennHIP Procedure:

1. Pre-Assessment Consultation

We evaluate your dog’s age, breed, and medical history.

2. General Anaesthesia/ Sedation for Comfort & Accuracy

Light sedation/ General Anaesthesia ensures proper positioning and reduces stress.

3. Official Submission to PennHIP Database

Images are sent for certified analysis.

4. Detailed Results & Guidance

We explain your dog’s Distraction Index and recommend next steps for prevention, lifestyle modification, or      breeding decisions.

Who Should Consider PennHIP Screening?

  • Puppy owners of medium to large breeds

  • Responsible dog breeders in Singapore

  • Dogs intended for working, agility, or sporting careers

  • Dogs with a family history of hip dysplasia

  • Owners who want early hip health screening

When Should My Dog Be Screened?

  • Minimum age: 16 weeks

  • Ideal for early screening before breeding

  • Suitable for both young dogs and adults

Unlike some other hip scoring systems, PennHIP does not require your dog to be over one year old.

Benefits of Early Hip Screening in Singapore:

  • Reduce long-term arthritis risk

  • Minimise future surgical costs

  • Make informed breeding choices

  • Improve your dog’s mobility and quality of life

  • Gain peace of mind

  • Preventive care is always more effective than reactive treatment.
